Linux Distributions
Most of Linux distributions can be downloaded legally and free of the respective sites. Certain distributions sell books, or complete sets of CD / DVD, manual, technical support documentation, and some, such as Linux Ubuntu, a CD sent by mail to those interested, free of charge. Although there are many distributions, there are users who prefer to build a Linux system from scratch, using Linux From Scratch. Linux-based operating systems are generally available as 'distributions'. Some are aimed for particular user, the other servers or users with older computers. Some of the most used Linux distributions are listed and presented below.
Ubuntu is a common user-oriented project based on Debian GNU / Linux, which has gained great popularity by being easy to use and configure, while being strong and stable. Related distributions: Kubuntu using KDE, Xubuntu, Edubuntu for education-oriented applications. Currently, Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution.
SuSE Linux is a distribution aimed at both servers and desktops to workstations that emphasizes ease of use and configuration. It is mainly produced by the German company SuSE.
Fedora was born in Red Hat Linux project and is the exclusive free Linux version containing only free software and available free of charge on the Internet.
Debian GNU / Linux is one of the most comprehensive Internet distributions, containing a huge number of packages. The creators of the project developed APT package manager and DEB packages.
PCLinuxOS - A distribution derived from Mandriva Linux for the desktop that is distinguished by the ease of installation and is suitable for all users.
Mandriva Linux, formerly known as Mandrake Linux is a user-friendly distribution, for desktop oriented users, created by French company Mandriva.
Gentoo Linux distribution focuses on maximum performance and advanced users. Distribution is distinguished by the very long installation, which usually requires the compilation and optimization packages that it takes for installing the system. This results in a subsequent increase performance, but also a more difficult configuration. Gentoo package manager has a very advanced system called Portage.
RedHat Linux is one of the most popular distributions, currently targeted exclusively for commercial distribution for server market and business environment. This is the distribution that gave rise to Fedora Core project.
